PARTICLE ACCELERATORS CAN ALSO BE USED IN THE TREATMENT OF CERTAIN CANCEROUS TUMOURS.

The particles release their energy in the affected tissues and thus kill the harmful cells. Particle beams can be controlled with a precision of a third of a millimetre, preserving healthy tissues and targeting only the affected ones. Currently, only a handful of treatment centres of this type exist in the world. They include the MedAustron centre in Austria and CNAO in Italy, both developed in collaboration with CERN.
