The Code of the Universe

A RING-SHAPED PARTICLE ACCELERATOR, 100 KILOMETRES IN LENGTH, COULD REACH AN ENERGY OF 100 TEV, SEVEN TIMES MORE THAN THAT PRODUCED BY THE LARGE HADRON COLLIDER (LHC)

With this new energy regime, we could look directly for new particles and phenomena that might answer some of the most fundamental questions of modern physics: Why is the Higgs particle so light? What is dark matter? What explains the predominance of matter over antimatter? The experimental physicists and theorists are working to document the physics opportunities of the future collider.

Lightning bolts during a volcanic eruption in Chile release high energies in a short period of time. A particle accelerator makes it possible to reach high energies under controlled conditions, and thus to study the laws of nature. This photo of a lightning bolt merging with an erupting volcano in Chile won the inaugural “The Perfect Moment” photo contest in 2018.
